Second Series of Short Films

On Sunday at 3 p.m., the second series of short films screened at Boulder High School. Five great short films ranging from nine to 21 minutes brought a huge crowd to jam-pack the auditorium.

Coda, an animated short film from Ireland which was nominated for the 2015 Academy Award, started off the session. Similar to the feel of “Song of the Sea”, this is a beautifully animated masterpiece. A drunken man leaves a bar and stumbles into the streets and dies. His soul wanders around the city as death shows him many lessons and experiences.

coda“Mr. Invisible,” directed by Greg Ash, tells the story of an old man who is seen as invisible. The film brings audience members on a journey of thinking they understand what the film is about, until the end when a twist of plot takes place and leaves the audience shocked. Greg Ash came on stage after the screening and answered a few questions about the film, revealing the low budget for this incredible film.

“The Chicken” is a short from Germany and Croatia, directed by Una Gunjak.  The subtitled film tells the story of a young girl who receives a chicken for her birthday and goes to set it free before her mother can kill and cook it, without understanding the high stakes. “The Chicken” is a nuanced short that received a loud applause.

“A Mile in these Hooves” tells the story of two foster brothers who set off to cross the country in a mule costume in order to break the world record for longest distance travelled in a two-person costume. Directed by James Brylowski, the film tells an inspiring and hilarious tale.
